Night Check is a two-person shift every evening from 8:45pm to 10:00pm.
Night Check volunteers work at their own pace, with a partner, to feed the horses’ final meal of the day, ensure all horses are safe and secure for the night, and give prompt attention to emerging medical needs, escalating concerns to on-call staff when necessary.

Role Description
Like any chore shift at SAFE, each Night Check shift is a little bit different. But these are the main duties of a Night Check volunteer:
- Review notes from staff and previous shifts to ensure you’re aware of any horse changes
- Feed hay to horses in stalls and paddocks
- Feed grain or medications as requested
- Monitor water intake, top off water as needed
- Carefully evaluate each horse to ensure they’re behaving normally
- Escalate any concerns to staff as appropriate
- Ensure all doors and gates are securely fastened
Equally important for success in this position is what Night Check doesn’t do! Night Check volunteers must strictly follow SAFE’s procedures for horse handling. Being almost alone at the barn isn’t a reason to cut corners or disregard the policies that keep our horses and volunteers safe.
Role Requirements
The ideal Night Check candidate will have been a SAFE volunteer for at least three months, have some prior horse experience, and have taken the Herd Health Vital Signs class. That said, we’re looking to build a roster of folks who are interested in helping out around the farm in this way.
