The SAFE Alumni Team, is dedicated to supporting the well-being of horses adopted from SAFE and maintaining positive, ongoing relationships with their adoptive owners. The Alumni Team works closely with a team of volunteers who conduct annual site visits and calls, ensuring our horses continue to thrive in their forever homes. This role offers the opportunity to get to know a wonderful community of adopters—along with their amazing horses—while helping SAFE uphold its commitment to lifelong care. Alumni Site Check Volunteers visit adopted horses in their homes to ensure they are safe, healthy, and well cared for. You’ll serve as a friendly bridge between SAFE and our adopters while observing the horse’s environment and condition.


Alumni Site Check Volunteer – Position Description

Purpose
Alumni Site Check Volunteers support SAFE’s lifelong commitment to adopted horses by conducting periodic site visits. These visits ensure each horse remains in a safe, appropriate environment and that adopters feel supported as part of the SAFE community.

Reporting To: Alumni Coordinator


Responsibilities

Pre-Visit

  • Receive assignment and background information from the Coordinator.
  • Contact the adopter and schedule the visit within the provided timeline.

During the Visit

  • Represent SAFE in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Clearly explain the purpose of the visit.
  • Utilize the established Alumni Site Visit Checklist.
  • Observe and document:
    • Fencing and property safety
    • Shelter and footing
    • Feed storage, hay quality, and water access
    • Manure management
    • Horse’s physical condition (body condition, feet, visible injuries)
  • Take required photos (both sides, front, rear, feet).
  • Ask standard care questions (veterinary, vaccination, dental).
  • Request permission for possible alumni updates on SAFE platforms.

Post-Visit

  • Complete and submit the checklist form.
  • Email documentation and photos to alumni@safehorses.org.
  • Report any concerns to the Alumni Coordinators.
  • Refrain from making determinations or promises; Coordinators manage all follow-up.

Qualifications

  • Strong observation skills
  • Professional communication
  • Ability to maintain objectivity
  • Comfort working around horses and farm environments
  • Reliability and discretion

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 1–2 hours per assigned visit, including documentation.
  • Visits are scheduled throughout the year.
